Buddy Werner 2008 Schedule

Ski and Snowboard racers who want more racing, but not able to commit to the full Ski Team schedule, may sign up for the Buddy Werner program. This program is designed for skiers and snowboarders, aged 6-13, seeking a racing experience that is skills-oriented. Named after famous Steamboat Springs Olympian, Buddy Werner, this program  introduces and hooks young skiers and snowboarders into the fabulous winter sport of Racing. Our racers learn the importance of skiing safely, under control at all times, and skiing with their appointed coach and team. Helmets are mandatory. Registration info here

Participants meet in small groups with volunteer adult coaches on Saturdays, January through March. Participants are instructed in the basics of racing and team participation with emphasis on learning new racing skills. A total of 4 timed races held at Sunlight Mountain Resort are available. For those who want to travel and race with other local recreational programs, they may qualify and sign up for the "Western State Championship." Parents must attend this road trip.  The location will be determined after the season begins.  This gives our racers an opportunity to travel and race in a USSA event.  

T - Squad

Not quite ready for Ski Team? Want a little more than Buddy Werner offers? Then the T - Squad is your ticket. This program gives you twice as much ski training than the Buddy Werner program yet half the expense of the full Ski Team membership. Racers will meet Saturdays and Sundays starting January 7th. Christmas Camp is available for an additional charge. Racers will get to compete in one USSA race and Valley Series races. Registration info here

Jan. 12^th           Safety Meeting with Ski Patrol, Dual Slalom Practice, Group Picture Day

Jan. 19^th           Slalom Race, Timed, Awards on Deck

Jan. 26^th           Intro to Giant Slalom

Feb. 2nd               Giant Slalom Race, Timed, Awards on Deck

Feb. 9^th             Intro to Super Giant Slalom

Feb. 16^th          Presidents Day Break     NO Buddy Werner   

Feb. 23rd        Super Giant Slalom Race, Timed, Awards on Deck

March 1st          Area Finals, Timed, Awards on Deck

March 9th        *Buddy Werner Western Council Cup State Championships Steamboat Springs. *We can only bring 25 racers to the Western Council Cup race. Parents must accompany child at this event. More details will be available at a later date.

Buddy Werner PARENT Tips

Our volunteer coaches will begin classes at 9a and end their classes at 3p. 

Please have you child dressed and ready to ski in front of the lodge at 9:00am.

Please pick your racers up by 3p in front of the lodge. 

Please remember that all racers must have a valid Sunlight Mountain ski pass/ticket, helmet, ski poles, and appropriate ski/board equipment.  

Sunlight Buddy Werner Race Information: (all times approximate)

Race location for Slalom is Ivy’s Run.  Parents can watch from skiers left approx half way down the run.

Giant Slalom and Super Giant Slalom location is White River.  Parents can watch at the top of Sunburst where it meets White River on skiers left.

Slalom and Giant Slalom are combined times for two runs. 

Super Giant Slalom is one run.
